Opera at Home, began in 1998 when founder Sherry Boone met friends and actors of color in particular, who were frustrated with doing their umpteenth production of Porgy and Bess. They wanted the opportunity to sing Mozart, Wagner and Verdi, as well. So Sherry Boone along with co-founders Theresa Hamm-Smith, Micheal Lofton, Rick Hoffenberg and Petina Cole decided to start a multi-cultural opera company, Opera at Home.
Opera at Home, "Opera with an Edge" is dedicated to creating a "heart to heart" exchange between audience and artist and sharing classical music with undeserved audiences--low income, no income, seniors and children. Opera at Home also performs privately in homes for special events and holiday functions. Since the color of music is love, what began as a response to a need for the African American Opera Singer has blossomed into a truly multi cultural crusade to touch hearts with music. Opera at Home's mission is to reach the world! Exciting news..."Opera at Home Triumphs with Ellen Craft"! In August 2004 Opera at Home ,with Solar Jet Productions and Wayne Michael Palmer produced Ellen Craft , A New American Opera at the Schimmel Center for the Arts for six performances at the New York International Fringe Festival .
